The Fall

“Have you heard? Society seems to have collapsed,” Alex said, looking over the balcony of their penthouse.

“Oh, That’s too bad for them. How did it happen,” Liz answered from the pool.

“War, famine, disease, doesn’t really matter much to us, does it?”

“S’pose not. What are they doing down there, anyway?”

“Looks like a lot of freaking out going on. I can see fires set all throughout the city. You don’t think we should be worried about them coming for us at all, do you?”

“Better find some way to protect ourselves just to be sure.”

“Well, I’m sure we could hire security to keep away the undesirables.” Alex got on the phone to make a call. “Hi, I’m in need of some private security for me and my wife. What, no, don’t put me on hold. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones with this idea,” he said to Liz.

After a couple hours of waiting on hold someone finally picked up. “Hello Safety Guarantee, what are your security needs.”

“Yeah there seems to be a societal collapse going on outside,” Alex said. “We could use a team to help us with any ne’er-do-wells that might otherwise wish us harm.”

“And how will you be paying on this occasion?”

“Credit.”

“Oh, sorry. I don’t think you understand. What will you be providing of actual value to hire us?”

“We have the money. I assure you, we can pay,” said Alex.

“No, you can’t. your money is worthless. No government means no centralized bank means no money anymore. Actually, it doesn’t matter, we have nothing to pay our employees so they all quit. Enjoy the rest of your day.”

“Well shit,” Alex said as he hung up the phone.

“What happened,” asked Liz.

“Apparently money no longer has any value, so that’s a problem.”

“Well, we still have a good stock pile of food. I’m sure we could use that to pay some needy fool.”

“Well,” said Alex looking over the balcony once again, “whatever we do we better do it fast cause it looks like the people are organizing down there, and I think they might be headed this way.

A large crowd made their way up to the penthouse to confront those that watched as they toiled in the metaphorical fields, who got rich off of their hard labor, coming to them now as equals to give them the punishment that they rightfully deserved.
